LENNY KRAVITZ: CRAZY SEXY COOL
Lenny says that his life today is about serenity. “Things have calmed down around me. I used to have a lot of people around, but not so much anymore. The few people that I have around me now add and multiply, and I’m extremely happy with where I am as a person and artist.” In conversations like these, Lenny often refers to his late mother, who died in 1995. “My mother was really into being real. She did not try to elevate herself in a pretentious way because she was on the top TV show, but that was her craft and she was who she was. When she started to make money and we moved to LA, we didn’t have a maid. My mom would be cleaning the house, and so would I, with her. She would say that the naked ‘me’ out of bed was who she was. That ‘me’ wasn’t Roxie Roker, the famous actress.”
Still, certain rock star episodes demonstrate that he is quite used to getting it his way, most of the time. Andelman told me about a documentary they shot a couple of years ago in Brazil. There were a million people assembled for Lenny on Copacabana beach, in the first of a series of free rock concerts organized by the city of Rio de Janeiro. (The Rolling Stones performed there in front of 1.5 million people last February.) The entire video production crew flew to Rio with a ton of equipment, and the idea was to capture a Lenny performance in an idyllic, tropical setting. Everything went well, and they filmed away for a couple of days.
